Students graduating in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) have traditionally been in high demand for their skills. Statistics compiled by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and United States Department of Labor (DOL) show this historical trend and project significant increases in demand for the next decade despite the current economic conditions [1,2]. Because of the high demand for STEM graduates and the contribution of high-technology industries to the country’s economic growth, significant effort must be placed on providing sufficient supply.CBSE School in Kumbakonam  
 

One of the methods commonly ascribed to have positive effects on recruiting students into STEM areas is engaging them while still in high school.  Activities such as “career days” or open-house tours certainly increase interest but provide the high school students with little depth of experience.

 College preparatory classes in mathematics and the physical sciences have been used to very good effect to prepare students for these aspects of STEM careers. Because engineering topics generally require a significant prerequisite knowledge of mathematics and science, incorporating experience with them at the high school level proves difficult. However, there are experiences common to engineering disciplines which can be presented contemporaneously with high school mathematics and science instruction.

Several excellent programs have been initiated to create high school curricula with engineering content. One such program is Project Lead The Way (PLTW) which offers several courses with engineering content to high school students. PLTW has created a curriculum and manages its adoption through a strict program of certification both for individual instructors and schools that wish to participate in PLTW programs.
