Students graduating in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) have traditionally been in high demand for their skills. Statistics compiled by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and United States Department of Labor (DOL) show this historical trend and project significant increases in demand for the next decade despite the current economic conditions [1,2]. Because of the high demand for STEM graduates and the contribution of high-technology industries to the country’s economic growth, significant effort must be placed on providing sufficient supply.
 
Several excellent programs have been initiated to create high school curricula with engineering content. One such program is Project Lead The Way (PLTW) which offers several courses with engineering content to high school students. PLTW has created a curriculum and manages its adoption through a strict program of certification both for individual instructors and schools that wish to participate in PLTW programs.  
 
PLTW was developed collaboratively by Rochester Institute of Technology and local school districts to provide college-level introductory courses in a variety of engineering fields. This national curriculum offers students an understanding of what engineers do and how engineers think. The purpose of this program is to cultivate a new generation of engineers and inspire students who may otherwise be nonplussed by traditional math and science courses.
